Brazilian Butt Lift: Finding the Right BBL Surgeon Near You
When you search for a BBL surgeon near you, the results can feel overwhelming. Here is what actually matters — and what to ask before you trust anyone with this procedure.

Why the search for a BBL surgeon deserves more than a map pin
A Brazilian butt lift moves your own fat from one part of your body to your buttocks. Fat is removed from areas like the belly or waist with liposuction, cleaned, and then placed into the buttocks to add shape. It sounds straightforward. It is not. The BBL carries specific risks that other cosmetic procedures do not, and the surgeon's technique is the single biggest factor in your safety.
Proximity matters for follow-up visits and recovery check-ins. But distance should never outweigh safety credentials and surgical technique. A surgeon a short drive away who injects fat into the muscle is not a better choice than a surgeon an hour away who follows the national safety rule. Start with safety. Then look at the map.
The safety rule that should guide your search
Fat can enter a vein and travel to the lungs. This is called a fat embolism, and it can be deadly. In the past, deaths from BBL surgery were linked to fat being injected into the gluteal muscle. The national safety standard now requires fat to be placed only in the subcutaneous layer — the layer just under the skin, above the muscle. At Tulsa Surgical Arts, this is not a suggestion. It is our rule.
When you consult with any surgeon, ask directly: where do you place the fat? If the answer is not clear, or if the surgeon cannot explain the difference between subcutaneous and intramuscular placement in plain language, that tells you something. A surgeon who takes this procedure seriously will welcome the question.
We perform BBL surgery in our AAAHC-accredited surgery center, which meets the same safety standards as many hospital-based surgical facilities. The center includes a private overnight guest suite for patients who are traveling in or whose recovery plan calls for on-site observation.
What to look for beyond the before-and-after photos
Photos matter. They show you a surgeon's eye for proportion and shape. But they do not tell you about the operating room, the anesthesia team, or the recovery protocol. Ask about facility accreditation. Ask whether the surgeon has specific training in body contouring and fat transfer. Ask how many of these procedures the practice performs, and what the plan is if something goes wrong.
At our practice, BBL is performed by surgeons whose training includes a cosmetic surgery fellowship — the AACS-certified fellowship program housed at Tulsa Surgical Arts. Dr. Cuzalina, who co-chaired the Body Procedures Cadaver Workshop at the AACS national meeting, has published peer-reviewed work on liposuction technique and facial fat management, disciplines that share the same foundational skill: understanding how fat behaves in the body [3].
Patients travel to Tulsa from across the country for this procedure. Broken Arrow is about five miles from the practice. Whether you are local or flying in, the consult process is the same: an honest conversation about your anatomy, your goals, and whether a BBL is the right path.
Recovery: what the weeks actually look like
Not all the placed fat survives. Your body absorbs some of it. The size you see on the day of surgery will settle smaller. The lasting result shows after three to six months, once swelling clears and the surviving fat stabilizes. This is your result. Setting that expectation early is part of our job.
For the first two weeks, you do not sit directly on your buttocks. You use a special pillow under your thighs when you must sit, and you sleep on your stomach or side. Most people return to desk work around two weeks. Normal sitting and full exercise resume around six weeks for most patients. We go over every detail of this timeline before your surgery and again at discharge.
In any emergency — chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden confusion, or one leg swelling more than the other — call 911 first. Do not drive yourself. Do not wait. These can be signs of a blood clot or fat embolism, and they require immediate emergency care.
The consultation is where your search ends
A consultation is not a sales pitch. It is a physical examination, a review of your anatomy, and an honest discussion of what a BBL can and cannot do for you. We review every risk on our list — fat embolism, uneven shape, fat necrosis, bleeding, infection, scarring, numbness, blood clots, anesthesia complications, and the possibility of revision surgery. You read the risk list before you arrive. We go over it again in person.
If you have been searching for a BBL surgeon near you, we invite you to schedule a consultation at Tulsa Surgical Arts. Call 918-392-7900, text us, or book online. Bring your questions. That is exactly what the visit is for.
