Why proximity matters for a surgical patient

Breast augmentation is outpatient surgery. You go home the same day. In the first week your chest will feel tight and sore — like a hard workout that lingers. You will have a one-week follow-up, and possibly others in the weeks that follow. Living about six miles from the practice means each of those visits is a short, low-stress drive.

In any true emergency — chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden confusion, or a leg that swells — call 911 first. That guidance holds regardless of where you live.

What happens at the consultation

The consultation is where the real decisions are made. You and your surgeon choose the implant size and placement together. An implant is a soft shell filled with saline or silicone gel. It can sit behind the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. Each option has trade-offs we walk through in person, sized to your frame.

We also review the honest risk list — every one of the items on it. Capsular contracture, implant rupture over time, changes in nipple sensation, the rare reports of body-wide symptoms some patients link to implants, and the very rare cancer of scar tissue around certain implants. You read it before the visit. We discuss it face to face. No question is unwelcome.

One fact that deserves its own sentence: implants do not last a lifetime. Plan on additional surgery someday. That reality shapes how we counsel you on timing, implant choice, and long-term follow-up.

Surgery day and the first six weeks

Surgery takes about an hour. You receive general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a short incision, most often in the fold under the breast, creates a pocket, places the implant, checks its position, and closes in layers with dissolving stitches. You wake up, recover in our AAAHC-accredited surgery center, and go home the same day. A private overnight guest suite is available if your surgeon recommends it.

The recovery arc is honest and predictable. The first few days bring chest tightness and soreness. Walk the same day. Sleep on your back. By one week, most patients with desk jobs return to work — no lifting over ten pounds. By two weeks, soreness fades and light lower-body exercise is usually fine. At six weeks, full exercise resumes, including chest workouts. Implants continue to soften and settle over months.

For Bixby patients, that six-mile distance means follow-up visits fit easily into a lunch break or an after-school window. Recovery is smoother when the logistics are simple.
