Why implants sometimes need a second chapter

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Over the years, the body can form a hard scar shell around an implant—a condition called capsular contracture. An implant can leak, shift out of position, or simply no longer match the size or shape you want. Any one of these is a reasonable reason to revisit the operating room.

Revision surgery fixes a problem with implants placed in the past. Options include swapping implants for a different size or type, removing the surrounding scar tissue, or removing implants for good. Removing implants without replacing them is always a fair choice. Some women also add a breast lift at the same time if the skin has loosened.

The goal is straightforward: correct what is not right, carefully, and do it once. A second operation deserves the same precision—arguably more—than the first.

The short drive from Bixby

What happens during the consultation

A revision consult is different from a first-time augmentation consult. We need to understand what was done before: the implant type, the pocket location, any prior complications. Bring your operative report if you have it. If you do not, we can usually gather what we need from imaging and a careful examination.

We discuss every realistic option. If the tissue asks for a lift in addition to an implant exchange, we say so. If removal alone will give you a result you are happy with, we say that too. The conversation is honest and unhurried. You leave with a clear picture of the surgical plan, the risks, and the recovery timeline.

Every surgery carries risks. For revision, the main ones include the possibility that scar tissue can return, changes in nipple sensation, bleeding, infection, uneven results, and the chance that further surgery may be needed later. We review all of these with you in person before any decision is made.

Inside the operating room

You receive general anesthesia. The surgeon usually works through your existing scar when possible, so no new incision line is added. The old implant is removed. If hard scar tissue has formed around it, that capsule may be removed as well—a step called capsulectomy.

If you chose new implants, the pocket is adjusted to fit them properly and the new implants are placed. If you chose removal only, the pocket is closed. A lift can be performed at the same time if the skin is loose. The incisions are closed in layers. Small drains are sometimes placed and stay in for a few days.

Recovery and aftercare for Bixby patients

The first few days involve soreness similar to what you may remember from your original augmentation. Being close to the practice means follow-up appointments are convenient and quick. We monitor healing at each visit and adjust your activity restrictions as the tissue settles.

Most scars fade over the course of a year, though some may stay raised or wide. Numbness near the incision lines usually resolves over months; small areas can remain permanently numb. Results are never perfectly symmetrical—the two sides of the body never match exactly. We set these expectations clearly so there are no surprises.

If you notice spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or any sign of a blood clot such as sudden leg swelling or chest pain, go to your nearest emergency room or call 911 immediately. These are rare but serious events that require urgent care.
