Why patients seek breast implant revision

Revision surgery fixes a problem with breast implants placed in the past. The reasons are practical, not cosmetic vanity. A hard scar shell around the implant — called capsular contracture — can make the breast feel firm and uncomfortable. An implant can shift out of position, creating asymmetry that clothing no longer hides. A leak, whether saline or silicone, needs to be addressed surgically.

Sometimes the reason is simply a change of heart about size. A patient may want smaller implants, larger ones, or no implants at all. Removing implants without replacing them is always a fair choice, and we discuss that option openly in every consultation.

Whatever the reason, the goal is the same: fix what is not right, carefully, in a single well-planned operation.

The drive from Broken Arrow

Tulsa Surgical Arts is located at 7322 E 91st St, Tulsa, OK 74133 — about 5 miles from Broken Arrow in a straight line. Drive time will depend on your route, but the proximity matters most during the weeks after surgery when you return for follow-up appointments. Short drives make recovery easier.

Free on-site parking is available, and on surgery day your driver can pull directly to the entrance for drop-off and pick-up. After anesthesia, a responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. That rule is non-negotiable for your safety.

What happens in the operating room

You receive anesthesia — medicine that makes you sleep. The surgeon usually works through your old scar when possible, so no new incision line is added to the breast. The old implant comes out. If hard scar tissue has formed around it, that tissue may be removed as well. This step is called a capsulectomy.

If you chose new implants, the pocket is adjusted and the new implants are placed. If not, the pocket is closed. A breast lift can be added at the same time when the skin is loose and the tissue asks for it. The incisions are closed in layers. Small drains are sometimes used for a few days.

The procedure is performed in our AAAHC-accredited surgery center, which includes a private overnight guest suite for patients who prefer to recover on-site before heading home.

Risks we discuss before you decide

Every surgery has risks, and revision carries the same risks as first-time implant surgery plus a few of its own. Scar tissue can return. Nipple sensation may change. If implants are removed entirely, the breast shape depends on your remaining skin and tissue — it may look deflated at first. More surgery may still be needed later.

Other risks include bleeding that could require a return to the operating room, infection with signs like spreading redness or fever, scars that stay raised or wide, numb skin near the incisions, blood clots in the legs — a clot that travels to the lungs is an emergency requiring immediate care by calling 911 — and rare problems from anesthesia. The two sides of the body are never a perfect match. We review every one of these risks with you in person before your consult is over.

Your consultation and aftercare plan

A consultation is a conversation, not a commitment. We examine your current implants, review your imaging if you have it, and talk through every option — exchange, capsulectomy, removal, a lift, or a combination. You leave with a clear understanding of what the surgery involves and what recovery looks like week by week.

Because Broken Arrow is so close, aftercare visits are straightforward. The first few days involve soreness similar to your original augmentation. Follow-up appointments let us monitor healing, remove drains if placed, and answer the small questions that always come up. When any written instruction differs from what your surgical team tells you directly, their instructions win.

You can reach us at 918-392-7900. Text is welcome. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We encourage you to consult a qualified surgeon to discuss whether revision is right for you.

Questions

Asked in real consults.

Can I remove my implants without replacing them?
Yes. Removing implants without replacing them is always a fair choice. The breast shape afterward depends on your skin and tissue. Some patients add a lift at the same time to improve contour. We discuss every option during your consultation so you can decide what feels right.

Will the surgeon use my old scars?
When possible, the surgeon works through your existing scar so no new incision line is created. Every cut does leave a scar, and most fade over a year, though some may stay raised or wide. Your surgeon will explain the planned incision approach during your consult.
