Why Claremore patients make the drive
Choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon is a personal decision. Some patients find the right fit nearby. Others decide that a surgeon's focus, training, and volume of experience warrant a trip. Claremore sits about 25 miles from Tulsa Surgical Arts — a drive, not a journey. We see patients from communities across the Tulsa metro and well beyond state lines. The common thread is straightforward: each patient decided the surgeon and the facility mattered more than proximity.
Our practice operates from an AAAHC-accredited surgery center with a private overnight guest suite. Rhinoplasty is a signature procedure here, performed by Dr. Angelo Cuzalina — an experienced rhinoplasty author and past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery — and Dr. Chase Nelson, a cosmetic otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) who completed his fellowship training at this practice.
What happens at the rhinoplasty consultation
Every surgical plan begins with a consultation. During this visit you meet your surgeon, discuss your goals, review your anatomy, and receive a candid assessment of what surgery can and cannot accomplish. You will leave with a personal written quote. The consultation is private and carries no obligation.
Rhinoplasty is not a template procedure. The goal is a refined nose balanced to fit your face. Your surgeon will examine the bone, cartilage, and skin envelope, then explain what changes are realistic. If functional issues such as a deviated septum or turbinate hypertrophy are present, those can be addressed in the same operation.
For Claremore patients, the drive to our Tulsa office is manageable for both the initial consultation and any follow-up visits. Our consult team can help coordinate timing so you make the most of each trip.
Inside the operating room: how rhinoplasty is performed here
General anesthesia is administered by a board-certified anesthesia provider. You are fully asleep. A small incision is made in the columella — the skin between the nostrils — and just inside the nostrils, allowing the skin to be lifted off the underlying cartilage and bone. The bone and cartilage are then refined through judicious removal and repositioning with sutures to achieve a balanced, natural nasal shape. Grafts are often placed for support and contour [0, 1, 2].
The nasal skin is laid back into place and the incisions are closed with fine suture. Internal splints are placed, followed by external tape and a splint. Surgery usually takes about 1.5 to 3 hours. Most patients return home the same day with an adult to help. These times and recovery windows are typical planning ranges; your written plan is set at consultation.
The published surgical record behind this procedure
Dr. Cuzalina has co-authored peer-reviewed chapters on rhinoplasty spanning a decade of published work. These include "Revision Rhinoplasty" (2012) [3], "Rhinoplasty for the Cleft Lip and Palate Patient" (2016) [2], "Challenging Rhinoplasty for the Cleft Lip and Palate Patient" (2021) [1], and "The Cleft Nasal Deformity" (2022) [0]. He also guest-edited an Elsevier rhinoplasty issue [4]. This body of work reflects a sustained focus on nasal surgery, including complex and revision cases.
Dr. Nelson brings fellowship training in cosmetic otorhinolaryngology completed at this practice. Our patient gallery includes before-and-after photography and case films from both surgeons. Individual results vary.
Recovery and aftercare for nearby patients
Most rhinoplasty patients return to work within 7 to 10 days. Swelling resolves gradually over weeks and months. Because Claremore is about 25 miles away, follow-up appointments are straightforward to schedule without significant travel planning.
Our AAAHC-accredited facility includes a private overnight guest suite for patients who prefer to stay close after surgery. Your surgical team will provide detailed written aftercare instructions and remain available by phone throughout your recovery. If you ever experience a symptom that feels like an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room first.
