What do dermal fillers do?

Chances are good that you know at least a handful of people who use injectable dermal fillers to enhance their look on a regular basis. Because filler injections can produce natural-looking and long-lasting results, however, you may not even realize your friends and family members have fillers! Some of the most common cosmetic concerns that can be improved or reversed with dermal fillers, like JUVÉDERM, include:

  • Static lines and wrinkles
  • Circles under the eyes
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Thin lips
  • Marionette lines
  • Facial folds
  • Asymmetric nose
  • Set-back chin
  • Weak jawline

How do lip fillers work?

Arguably the most popular application for dermal fillers today is to produce a plumper pout. During lip filler injections in Tulsa, patients will relax in one of our private in-office treatment rooms. The lips will be cleansed to remove any makeup or debris, and a topical anesthetic cream will be applied to minimize pain or discomfort during lip injections. One of our experienced cosmetic injectors will then strategically inject the desired filler into various areas of the lips to achieve the patient’s desired size and shape. Manual massage may be performed to ensure the smoothest, most even, and most natural-looking result possible. Almost immediately after lip filler injections, patients can expect some amount of swelling, soreness, and bruising, but these side effects are usually mild and resolve within a few days.

How can I reduce swelling after lip fillers?

One of the most beneficial things you can do to speed up the healing process and reduce swelling after getting lip injections is to apply a cold compress. Many patients wonder whether using an ice pack after lip fillers will “freeze” the filler or cause it to migrate. Fortunately, applying ice to the lips after JUVÉDERM injections is perfectly safe when patients follow their provider’s instructions. When using a cold compress after lip fillers, it is important to avoid putting excess pressure on the lips. Instead, patients should hold the ice pack or ice bag – wrapped in a towel or cloth to prevent sticking – gently to the lips for about 5 – 10 minutes at a time. In addition to using a cold compress after injectable fillers, patients should follow these  instructions for the most comfortable recovery period and most pleasing results:

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for the first 24-48 hours
  • Apply ice or frozen green peas off and on for first 24-28 hours
  • Do not drink alcohol for 4 days prior to injections
  • Avoid aspirin and fish oil (omega) pills for 2 weeks prior to injections
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated for first 2 days
  • Do not rub or massage the treated area initially

When performed by a skilled injector and cared for properly, JUVÉDERM lip fillers can give patients the perfectly plump pout for up to 12 – 18 months.
