What is Liposuction?
No matter how much you try to lose weight, you probably still experience unwanted pockets of fat that prevent you from feeling confident in your appearance. At Tulsa Surgical Arts in Tulsa, OK, we offer the latest techniques to safely eliminate fat from certain body parts. Using fat removal technologies and techniques, such as Smartlipo™, VASER, micro-liposuction, Renuvion® J-Plasma®, tumescent, and ultrasonic, liposuction is a body contouring procedure that reduces pockets of fat from the stomach, hips, thighs, and buttocks to produce a slimmer appearance. To address your cosmetic concerns and enhance your appearance, we can combine liposuction with other types of treatments. During your initial visit, Dr. Angelo Cuzalina will assess your problem areas and determine if the procedure is right for you. Our hope is that you look and feel your absolute best.
Liposuction Reviews
Is Liposuction For You?
Fat removal surgery is a terrific procedure for patients who are at an ideal weight but still have stubborn pockets of fat that are difficult to lose with exercise and diet. Those interested in liposuction should have good skin laxity because liposuction does not address saggy skin. Additionally, it is important to realize that liposuction is not an answer to weight loss. If you plan on becoming pregnant, liposuction might not work well because it could compromise your long-term results. During your initial consultation, Dr. Cuzalina will help set realistic expectations.
Surgical Technique
At Tulsa Surgical Arts, we complete this treatment as an outpatient procedure and use general anesthesia. To start your treatment, we make a punch-hole incision through the skin so we can place the cannula. A cannula is a special tool that loosens fatty tissue, which allows us to vacuum it out. After eliminating the fat, Dr. Cuzalina will close the small incision. Based on the number of sections we treat, your surgery could take 1 – 3 hours. In the separate recovery area, your post-op nurse will help manage any pain and care for your treated areas until your discharge.
What to Expect
For several weeks, you will need to recover at home. The recovery period depends on the amount of fat we removed and how many areas we treated. Typically, patients experience bruising and swelling for 1 – 2 weeks. Around 7 – 10 days after surgery, we will need to take out your sutures. To ensure you heal correctly, the most important part is to give your body time to rest and recover. You should slowly work yourself back into a daily routine and stick to walking and light workouts. Remember, you may notice some improvements after six weeks, but it will take 6 – 10 months until your new body shape and contour are attained.
Liposuction FAQ
What about cellulite and loose skin?
Liposuction surgery only addresses excess fat. If you have loose skin, Dr. Cuzalina may recommend combining liposuction with a surgical body lift. Liposuction is often performed along with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thighplasty, to give you your best results. For cellulite, there are several minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatment options, including EMSCULPT®. During your consultation, tell Dr. Cuzalina about all your concerns, like cellulite and loose skin, so your best treatment plan can be developed.
Will I have scars following liposuction?
Since liposuction is a surgical procedure, incisions will need to be made and stitched. This will create scars, but Dr. Cuzalina does his best to reduce their appearance. This starts with making small, thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or in less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. Cuzalina or a member of his team will go over how to care for your incisions so they heal flat and eventually fade.
Will my results last?
Before you have liposuction surgery, it's important to be prepared to maintain your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in your body, you can still lose and gain weight. Dr. Cuzalina recommends that you be at or near a healthy weight before having liposuction. Afterward, it's best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Pregnancy after liposuction will also alter your results; however, another surgery, like a mommy makeover, may be performed to refresh your body.
