As a 57 year old woman I was unhappy with the area under my eyes, I had dark circles and hollowness and started to develop fat pockets. I looked tired all of the time. I tried fillers several times that left me unhappy ☹️. I started visiting Dr. Angelo Cuzalinas office Tulsa Surgical Arts in Tulsa for laser treatments 2 years ago and after talking to Dr. Angelo Cuzalina about the area under my eyes and seeing photos of his work I knew he could help me. I scheduled an appointment for an lower eyelid blepharoplasty in January of 2020. It has been 6 weeks and I’m so glad I made the decision to have this done. I had no pain and healed quickly. I’m excited about the results and my husband tells me he can see a big difference. Dr. Angelo Cuzalina is a great surgeon and you can tell that he cares very much for what his patients want to accomplish. I highly recommend him to anyone wanting plastic surgery. Fran B.

Is An Eyelid Lift For You?

Blepharoplasty is a facial cosmetic surgery that Dr. Cuzalina performs on both women and men. When the skin starts to lose elasticity, it causes bags or excess skin around the eyes. Typically developing in older adults, it may also happen at an earlier age for patients who have a genetic predisposition. During your initial consultation, Dr. Cuzalina will discuss your cosmetic goals, listen to your medical history, and determine if this procedure is right for you. In most cases, ideal candidates have sagging skin and folds on the upper eyelid or puffy skin underneath the lower eyelid. These issues can create functional problems that hinder your ability to see. For some patients, the condition is caused by underlying issues, such as an allergy or thyroid disorder. In these patients, the proper treatment may be medical rather than surgical. Additionally, if you experience chronic dry eyes, please let us know about this problem because it could exacerbate your condition. Once Dr. Cuzalina has determined if this treatment is right for you, he will create a detailed treatment plan. If you want a more awakened appearance, blepharoplasty can help you see, look, and feel better.

How is an Eyelid Lift Performed?

Depending on your type of blepharoplasty, Dr. Cuzalina will administer general anesthesia or IV sedation. During your procedure, he may perform it on the top of the eyelid, under or on the bottom eyelid, or a combination of both. If needed, patients can also combine this procedure with other treatments, including a facelift or brow lift.

  • Upper
To increase your field of vision and for a more appealing eyelid appearance, upper eyelid surgery decreases the folds of excess skin. The incision is placed along the natural crease to remove loose skin and fatty tissue.
  • Lower
Lower blepharoplasty reduces puffy and bulging skin underneath the lower lid. The incision is made along the lash line so Dr. Cuzalina can remove excess tissue and fat. The incision placement also reduces the appearance of your scar. Next, he gently lifts the skin for a flatter, smoother look. If you experience discoloration or for additional smoothness, we may use a nonsurgical laser procedure and injectables.

Following the completion of your surgery, Dr. Cuzalina closes the incisions with a fine, absorbable suture.

What Can I Expect After an Eyelid Lift?

Depending on if you have one or both eyelids treated, blepharoplasty can last for up to two hours. After the procedure, you will need a few days to recover and rest at home. To reduce swelling, bruising, and discomfort, patients can use cold compresses. Your blepharoplasty results may last a decade or longer; however, even though they last long, aging does not stop. To continue enhancing your surgical results, we can use noninvasive treatments, such as wrinkle relaxers, fillers, and lasers.

How much does eyelid surgery cost?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery costs can vary based on whether you are having a lower eyelid lift, upper, or both. As soon as your treatment plan is created in your consultation, Dr. Angelo Cuzalina can discuss estimated costs. To get results that look natural and last for many years, it is better to concentrate on finding an experienced surgeon whom you are comfortable with, like Dr. Cuzalina, instead of trying to find the cheapest place. To help you afford great results, Tulsa Surgical Arts takes several payment methods, and we can help you find low-interest financing.

Can I use insurance to pay for my eyelid surgery?

When excess skin is compromising your vision, your health insurance may cover some of your eyelid lift. Please talk to Dr. Cuzalina in your consultation if you may be using your insurance. Someone at Tulsa Surgical Arts will help you submit the needed information and paperwork to your provider to consider your claim. Generally, you will need a diagnosis from an optometrist or ophthalmologist that blepharoplasty is medically necessary to improve your field of vision.

What are some other benefits of an eyelid lift?

Eyelid surgery not only helps to refresh your face, but it can also give you other benefits. You may discover your vision field expanding when loose skin from your upper eyelid is removed. It is also easier to apply eye makeup once your upper eyelid is smooth. Eliminating fine lines, paper-thin skin, dark circles, and puffy bags under your eyes may help your eyes appear fuller and brighter without a lot of makeup.

Will an eyelid lift fix wrinkles and Crow's feet?

Forehead wrinkles and Crow's feet may be better addressed with a facelift or brow lift as the improvements of eyelid surgery are limited to the eyelids only. Blepharoplasty can also be performed with a nonsurgical procedure such as BOTOX®, which can smooth wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. An injectable filler may help to add volume to hollow areas for a smoother appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Cuzalina will develop your unique treatment plan to fit your needs and goals.

What about nonsurgical treatments instead of eye surgery?

Nonsurgical skin tightening plus injectable treatments (for example, JUVÉDERM®, BOTOX, and Restylane®) can give you some improvements. Although, if you have moderate to severe sagging skin or want results that last a long time, eyelid surgery would be better than a nonsurgical treatment. When you have talked to Dr. Cuzalina about your concerns and goals for your eyes, he will give you his suggestions for your surgical or nonsurgical treatment plan. He may also recommend combining both surgical and nonsurgical procedures for your best results.

Younger-Looking Eyes

If you find it difficult to see or apply makeup because of hanging skin on your upper eyelids, or you feel frustrated by puffy bags underneath your eyes, then blepharoplasty could help you treat these problems. At Tulsa Surgical Arts, eyelid surgery helps patients attain a rejuvenated appearance and address their vision impairment concerns. If this procedure is right for you, Dr. Cuzalina will create a tailored treatment plan, and his billing staff can provide information about cost and financing plans.
