What Is A Facelift?

Dr. Angelo Cuzalina provides a full range of facial surgical treatments in Tulsa, OK. At Tulsa Surgical Arts, one of the most popular surgeries is a surgical facelift. Resulting in a refreshed appearance, a facelift targets specific regions of the face and helps decrease the appearance of sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines. For a younger-looking complexion, we can address lines near the eyes, cheeks, mouth, jowls, and neck. Before selecting the best facelift technique for you, Dr. Cuzalina will consider several factors, including the condition of your skin, the severity of skin laxity, your lifestyle, age, and anatomy. He can help you determine if you need a mini, mid, lower, or full facelift. Dr. Cuzalina is a highly trained and experienced surgeon who has years of experience performing facelift procedures. Using precise techniques, a conservative approach, and an artistic eye, Dr. Cuzalina's overall goal is to help you refresh your complexion so it appears rejuvenated, soft, and beautiful.

Is A Facelift Right For You?

If you experience sagging skin on the cheeks, underneath the eyes, or on the jowls, a facelift could address these issues. Depending on your cosmetic goals, a facelift can treat specific parts of the face. Age does not always determine the best time to receive a facelift. When it comes to determining the best facelift technique, Dr. Cuzalina will listen to your cosmetic goals, discuss your medical history, and assess your skin. The lifting technique is different for patients under the age of 50 compared to patients over the age of 60. In addition to your age, skin laxity is one of the most important factors to consider. Before undergoing surgery, facelift patients should maintain good health, refrain from smoking, and set realistic expectations.

Submentoplasty with neck contouring - I am 35 years old and have despised my inherited “ski slope” neck line and general neck laxicity. I just sort of had the attitude of “it is what it is,” but after a series of particularly unflattering photos, I decided to do something about it. I met with Dr. Cuzalina as he was the surgeon who performed my breast reduction. I had a rare complication post-op, and he took excellent care of me. After discussion, he told me that neck liposuction, which I initially considered, wouldn’t give me the results I wanted. Because my condition was inherited, the major pocket of fat was below the platsyma muscle and couldn’t be accessed with the liposuction cannula. After a brief crisis of conscience in which I felt that I was being disloyal to my dad, I scheduled my procedure.Updated on 30 Oct 2018:The surgery went great, and I saw myself without bandages when I went to take a shower 24 hours post-op. I have a neck! I can’t believe it! It is amazing! The swelling is INTENSE, but not much bruising. The drain is particularly annoying. Not much in the way of pain. It’s just VERY tight!Updated on 4 Nov 2018:I am SO swollen and everything is super tight. I had my one week follow-up, and the doc says all is healing well and that the swelling is just normal lymphatic response. I have some symmetrical lower lip weakness that is causing my smile and speech to be abnormal. The doctor assured me that it will come back. It makes me feel like it draws more attention to my face, but that could just be me.Updated on 13 Nov 2018:My profile looks like I always dreamed it would! However, I don’t think I fully understood the impact to my jawline and speech. Liposuction really traumatizes your body! Healing is slow going, but it is happening. I am trying to focus on the end game, but it is a challenge. I feel like I smile and speak strangely and that people are staring. I hope that part returns to normal soon!Updated on 1 Dec 2018:The swelling continues to get better each day, but is still worse in my left side. I would say that my swelling is, at best, 70% of the way back to normal. My incision is closed and healing nicely. I still have a lot of tightness, and my movements don’t look completely natural. I am also still having issues with my speech and smile. I have a 6 week follow-up appointment on Monday and plan to address these issues. I am also hoping for some steroid injections to speed up the swelling in some particularly lumpy areas. It’s getting there, even if it is slow going.Updated on 16 Jul 2019:My face and neck continue to get better each month. However, my smile and speech are still not 100%. I have had multiple consultations with my doctor and am assured that it is temporary paralysis of the Marginal Mandibular Nerve. I am told that any improvement at all from the outset means that the nerve will fully recover, but can take a year or longer. Recovery has been quite a process for me. I and not the most patient of people, and have had some dark lows because the face in the mirror wasn’t mine. If you’re considering this surgery, keep the end game in mind and be prepared for a LONG recovery period. Having said all that, I look more like a much-improved version of myself each day, and am more and more pleased with my decision to have surgery.

O. RealSelf

After losing over 100 lbs Dr. Cuzalina has helped me find my way back to my old self. I had a lower face and neck lift, brow lift, blepharoplasty & laser on June 22nd. My results have been beyond amazing! My scarring is impossible to see even when you know it is there! Most are hidden behind my hairline and the ones along the ear are perfectly placed. Dr. C. never fails me and his staff are the very best!! They make the whole experience incredible.

Dr. Cuzalina is the nicest man and most humble surgeon I have ever met. I had a total face and neck lift and I was extremely satisfied with the results. He took a lot of time explaining the procedures and I never felt rushed during my appointments. He is extremely skilled at what he does and I got quite a few compliments after the procedure. His entire staff is just as kind and accommodating as he is. They will see you at any time after surgery even if you don’t have an appointment. I really can’t say enough about Dr C to convey my satisfaction with the surgery and my follow up care. I highly recommend this surgeon and everyone who works with him!! Now I will need to think of reasons I can go back to see them all, lol!

What Are The Benefits Of A Facelift?

A facelift is a great alternative to more conservative or temporary treatments like wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers. This is because facelift surgery provides more dramatic results and can address a wider range of concerns. Patients at Tulsa Surgical Arts can also maintain a youthful look that does not require an ongoing commitment to injections. Our aesthetic team knows how to help you achieve a smoother, natural appearance that leaves you looking refreshed long-term.

Surgical Technique

We offer a variety of facelift techniques to address different parts or the entire face. Some procedures are slightly more invasive and intricate than others. To further enhance their appearance, patients can combine an eyelid lift, brow lift, or a rhinoplasty. Additionally, we can use noninvasive methods, such as BOTOX and dermal fillers, to improve your results. Some of the more common facelift techniques include:

  • Full Facelift
Considered the gold standard, a full facelift creates an incision along the hairline, which extends down to the temples and reaches the base of your ears. To smooth the complexion, Dr. Cuzalina gently pulls and tightens the underlying facial tissues and muscles. This technique decreases excess wrinkles and sagging. The traditional facelift is used for patients who have signs of aggressive aging. During a full facelift, we can combine various treatments, including an eyelid lift and chin augmentation.
  • Mini Facelift
During a mini facelift, a small incision is made around the ears to lift the skin to a higher position, which impacts the mouth and jawline. This method creates nice and subtle enhancements that look natural.
  • Mid-Facelift
Incorporating a similar approach to the mini facelift, the mid-facelift addresses sagging skin on the cheeks and the upper jaw. The mid-facelift works well for patients who want to improve the lower two-thirds of the face, including the jowls.
  • Lower Facelift
This particular facelift addresses the neck and chin, and in many cases, the jowls. If you prefer nonsurgical methods, Dr. Cuzalina can use KYBELLA injections to reduce a "double chin" and help you attain a younger-looking neck.

What To Expect

To ensure that you are ready to recover at home, our team will monitor you before releasing you. However, some out-of-town patients may prefer to stay in our overnight guest suite so they have additional help throughout the night. If you plan on going home, you will need a responsible adult to drive and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Before leaving, Dr. Cuzalina will schedule your follow-up appointments and provide detailed aftercare instructions. To ensure proper healing, you will have a large dressing wrapped around your head. On rare occasions, we may place surgical drains attached to bulbs that hang at your neck. These bulbs are removed in approximately 24 hours. To reduce any discomfort, such as bruising, swelling, drainage, and soreness, Dr. Cuzalina may prescribe pain medication. In about a month, you should look and feel much better. After the surgery, you will experience a glowing complexion with fewer lines and wrinkles. Overall, your face will appear naturally lifted and rejuvenated.

How much does a facelift cost?

The cost of your facelift will depend on the technique used. In your consultation, Dr. Cuzalina will develop your unique treatment plan to match your needs and goals. Once this is established, he can go over cost estimates. To avoid results that look unnatural, it's best to concentrate on finding an experienced surgeon, like Dr. Cuzalina, instead of the cheapest price. Tulsa Surgical Arts can help you find low-interest medical financing that will make your facelift affordable.

Which technique is best for me?

The best surgical facelift technique for you will vary based on your needs, goals, degree of skin laxity, which areas are being addressed, and more. To produce the results you want, Dr. Cuzalina will discuss the different surgical techniques in your consultation. He can then help you decide which technique is best for you.

Should I get a surgical or nonsurgical facelift?

Although there are several great noninvasive skin tightening procedures, these can only give you small improvements. If you have moderate to severe skin sagging, facelift surgery is the best choice to significantly improve your appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Cuzalina will discuss your options, including nonsurgical procedures, to help you select what is best for your needs and goals.

What about wrinkle fillers and relaxers over facelift surgery?

Wrinkle fillers and relaxers, like BOTOX® and JUVÉDERM®, have become very popular in recent years to refresh the face. Also known as a liquid facelift, injectable wrinkle treatments usually help with early signs of aging, but the results are temporary. A facelift will produce more significant improvements than injectables with results that can last for a long time. Ask Dr. Cuzalina about injectable treatments during your consultation.

Will my results look natural?

Some patients worry that facelift surgery will make their skin look too tight, shiny, or like they are in a wind tunnel. Dr. Cuzalina focuses on giving you a natural-looking result, so you appear refreshed, not fake. He listens to your concerns and goals before creating your personal treatment plan with the technique that will produce your best results.
