What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

At Tulsa Surgical Arts in Tulsa, OK, laser skin resurfacing is a noninvasive cosmetic procedure that utilizes pulsating beams of energy to eliminate damaged skin cell layers. This treatment reduces signs of aging and improves skin irregularities, such as acne scars or hyperpigmentation. Also known as a laser peel, fractional skin resurfacing is an effective procedure for patients who prefer clearer, softer, and younger-looking skin. Based on your needs, the Active FX™ or Viora laser is customized to address your skin concerns. You will require some recovery time for most laser skin resurfacing procedures. If you have any questions about laser skin resurfacing, Dr. Angelo Cuzalina will gladly discuss them during your consultation.

At Tulsa Surgical Arts, we offer three types of laser skin resurfacing procedures. We select these based on your skin's needs. We can use lasers for mild to severe skin damage. We offer ablative, non-ablative, and fractional laser treatments. Depending on your needs, these lasers can tighten skin, reduce wrinkles, or improve hyperpigmentation. Dr. Cuzalina will provide additional details about the different types of lasers and their benefits.

Is Laser Skin Resurfacing For You?

When selecting the best laser skin resurfacing treatment, Dr. Cuzalina considers multiple factors. Laser skin resurfacing works well for anyone who feels unhappy with their complexion. If you have sun-damaged skin, acne scars, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, or redness, this procedure can address these cosmetic flaws. In addition, it can improve rough-textured skin, scaly patches, or other skin surface problems. Dr. Cuzalina does not recommend this treatment for anyone who has dark skin tones or active acne. In addition, you will require some recovery time after laser therapy. Depending on your skin condition, you may need at least 2 – 3 weeks.

Our Laser Skin Resurfacing Technique

If you plan on undergoing a deeper laser resurfacing treatment, you may need to use a retinoid cream for 2 – 3 weeks. At the time of your procedure, this step helps prepare and protect the skin. To reduce any discomfort throughout the treatment, you may also receive medication. If your complexion only requires mild treatment, Dr. Cuzalina can apply a local anesthetic to numb the skin. However, for the whole complexion or more intense laser treatments, you may need some kind of sedation. During the procedure, you will relax in a comfortable treatment chair while the laser glides over the skin. You will feel the heat from the laser and a cold blast of air from the system's built-in cooling device. To rejuvenate your complexion, the laser eliminates damaged skin cells and stimulates the production of collagen.

As a 57 year old woman I was unhappy with the area under my eyes, I had dark circles and hollowness and started to develop fat pockets. I looked tired all of the time. I tried fillers several times that left me unhappy ☹️. I started visiting Dr. Angelo Cuzalinas office Tulsa Surgical Arts in Tulsa for laser treatments 2 years ago and after talking to Dr. Angelo Cuzalina about the area under my eyes and seeing photos of his work I knew he could help me. I scheduled an appointment for an lower eyelid blepharoplasty in January of 2020. It has been 6 weeks and I’m so glad I made the decision to have this done. I had no pain and healed quickly. I’m excited about the results and my husband tells me he can see a big difference. Dr. Angelo Cuzalina is a great surgeon and you can tell that he cares very much for what his patients want to accomplish. I highly recommend him to anyone wanting plastic surgery. Fran B.

Benefits Of Laser Skin Resurfacing

At Tulsa Surgical Arts, we understand that as you get older, your skin can turn increasingly dehydrated, dull, and lifeless. With laser skin resurfacing technologies, we give our Tulsa, OK patients an opportunity for revitalized skin with a solution that gives multiple amazing advantages:

  • Minimized appearance of creases and lines
  • Tightening of pores
  • Enhancement of inconsistent skin texture
  • Reduced appearance of scars and pigmentation problems
  • Increased self-confidence about your skin's aesthetic

What To Expect

Following a less aggressive resurfacing appointment, we apply a healing ointment, and you can return home to recover. The treated skin will look red, irritated, and swollen; however, these symptoms subside within a couple of days. Additionally, you will experience peeling, which happens over 3 – 5 days. If you receive a more intense laser treatment, your downtime will take longer. Most likely, the treatment areas will require protective dressings, and your symptoms will feel more intense. To reduce these side effects, Dr. Cuzalina may prescribe medication. The recovery period for a more intense resurfacing procedure can last several weeks.

No matter the level of treatment, you should reduce UV exposure and regularly apply sun protection. The treated skin will naturally crust, flake, and peel off. During this time, you should avoid picking at the flaking skin to prevent scarring. After the peeling process has finished, the treated skin feels smoother and looks clearer, rejuvenated, and younger.

At Tulsa Surgical Arts, laser skin resurfacing procedures offer excellent outcomes and can help you achieve a more youthful appearance without undergoing surgery. If you want to learn more about the benefits of laser skin resurfacing, our team in Tulsa, OK encourages you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Cuzalina. What's the best type of resurfacing for me?

Dr. Cuzalina will help you choose which resurfacing option is best for your needs and goals in your consultation. What treatment is best for you will depend on the health and condition of your skin, any skin problems, and the skin depth you want your treatment to reach. The length of recovery time might also be a deciding factor when choosing your treatment type. When unsure, it is better to start with a lighter treatment, then assess your outcomes and adjust as needed for your next treatment.

How can I help my skin recover after a resurfacing treatment?

Dr. Cuzalina or someone on his team will give you recommendations on how you can speed skin healing after a laser resurfacing treatment. The most important rule is not to pick or peel flaking skin. Doing this could lead to long-term damage, including scars. You should forgo all hair removal methods in the treatment area, which means no shaving, waxing, or depilatory creams. We will recommend cream to help soothe treated areas.

Should I get laser skin resurfacing, a chemical peel, or dermabrasion?

After listening to your skin problems, Dr. Cuzalina will help you decide if laser skin resurfacing, dermabrasion, or a chemical fits your needs and goals. Although all three rejuvenate your skin, each has pros and cons. During your consultation, we can discuss each option and determine the best recommendation for your needs.
