How Many Sizes Do You Lose with a Tummy Tuck?

By: Dr. Angelo Cuzalina

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen. It is best-suited to women and men who are already at or near their ideal body weight, but find that bulging belly fat simply will not relent, despite exercise and dieting.

If you are wondering how your clothes will fit after the procedure, here are a couple things to keep in mind:

  • You may or may not go down a pant size/dress size: While some patients go down 2 or 3 sizes, others more or less wear the same size after a tummy tuck. Sizing varies, as do clothing styles and fit, so it’s nearly impossible to say whether your overall size will be affected.
  • Your abdomen will be flatter and smoother, regardless of clothing size: While it is normal to wonder about clothing size, it is also useful to think about the way you want your body to change, not just the way you will fit in clothes. Even if a patient does not go down a size, they typically still love the way they look and feel after abdominoplasty. Although you may not have to change clothing size, you may find that your clothes fit better and you feel more confident wearing them.

On a related note, tummy tuck surgery is not a way to lose weight. You may find that a few pounds are lost or that you are the same weight as before. The procedure provides body contouring by removing stubborn skin and fat.

If you are interested in a tummy tuck, don’t let issues of clothing size deter you from learning more. Dr. Cuzalina has been performing these procedures for more than two decades. He will first listen to your goals and then help you decide if abdominoplasty can provide the results you expect.
